Ash Fork, Arizona, Santa Fe Depot

0.33 miles away

In the early 1880s, the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad (A&P) built a line west of Albuquerque that crossed the Colorado River at Needles, California. The new line continued northwest through Cajon Pass and Barstow to Mojave. From Mojave, the A&P was built southwest across the desert to Yuma, where it connected with another line running south from Sacramento.

The A&P extended its line north from Albuquerque to Winslow, Arizona. The following year, the Santa Fe Railroad (SF) acquired the A&P and extended the line north to Flagstaff and beyond. The SF also constructed a branch east from Winslow to Holbrook and Navajo Springs.

The two-story structure had a hipped roof and wide overhangs supported by decorative brackets. It was one of several depots constructed along the new line in Arizona.

The Ash Fork depot served as a center for shipping cattle and other livestock from northern Arizona to markets in California. It also handled general freight and passenger traffic. In 1886, an agent reported that "the business done at this place is very good considering the short time it has been open."

The Ash Fork depot continued to serve passengers and freight until 1971 when Amtrak discontinued service on the San Francisco Chief. The building was then used as a restaurant for a few years before being abandoned
